The Institute

About us

We are a state institution of culture, established by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2024. Our primary mission is to popularise knowledge of Poland’s language diversity. We support and initiate activities extending to so-called general (literary) Polish language, regional languages (including Kashubian, legally recognised as such), languages of national and ethnic minorities (i.a. German, Ukrainian, Czech, Lithuanian, Karaim and Lemko), dialects, linguistic variations, migrant languages, and the Polish Sign Language.

Our actions

We deliver goals we have been entrusted with by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (the Institute’s organiser) through specific activities, including the following:

  • Co-ordinating grant and scholarship programmes,
  • Designing educational materials,
  • Digitising, documenting, and disseminating resources with a focus on Poland’s language diversity,
  • Publishing,
  • Research activities,
  • Campaigns designed to popularise linguistic diversity in Poland,
  • Drafting language policy recommendations and guidelines on the national and European level,
  • Developing institutional co-operation in the area of protecting languages and language variations used contemporarily in Poland and abroad.

Our recipients include, but are not limited to authors, artists, regionalists, culture animators, non-governmental organisations, scientific institutions, educators and educational institutions, and anyone else concerned with promoting linguistic diversity in Poland.

Our institution and its activities arise from and are based on legal regulations, Polish and European alike. We operate pursuant to the following legislation:

  • European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages,
  • Polish Language Law,
  • National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language Law,
  • Law on the Polish Sign Language and Other Communication Measures,
  • Statutes awarded by the Minister of Culture and Cultural Heritage.
